Erasmus+ Summer School | Culture and Politics from the Middle Ages to Today

Přinášíme malou fotoreportáž z letní školy ve Vídni pořádané Středoevropskou univerzitou. Tato letní škola probíhá v rámci grantu COMMA – Communicating (in) the Middle Ages, jehož součástí je i Fakulta humanitních studií. Před 2 lety se tato letní škola uskutečnila na Islandu, minulý rok - v Praze. Cílem je popularizovat a zpřístupnit pluralitu evropské kultury a historie od dob Středověku skrze aktivity, navštěvování památek a semináře odborníků z CEU, University of Iceland, SDU Odense a Fakulty humanitních studií. FHS zastupovali vyučující Katedry jazyků a literatury Mgr. Klára Petříková, Ph.D. se seminářem na téma "Construing Female Identity in Medieval English Mystical Texts: The Case of Margery Kempe and Julian of Norwich," a Conan Turlough Doyle, M.A., Ph.D. s přednáškou na téma "Culture, Language and Hierarchy in Medieval Manuscripts."

Anotace k letní škole:

This week-long summer school explores how cultural products—including works of literature, art, architecture, music, and film—have served as crucial sites for negotiating identity, power, and belonging from the medieval period to the present day. The program concentrates on the political and social implications of cultural products and their (verbal and visual) language, both in the Middle Ages and in later engagements with the period. It approaches the theme from a variety of disciplinary angles, including literary studies, cultural history, political history, art history, and medievalism, to address topics such as medieval multilingualism, language ideology, and translation practices, as well as modern responses to and appropriations of the Middle Ages in the public sphere. Questions to be explored include: How do cultural products engage with political questions? What is the role of culture (art, literature, architecture, music, film, etc.) in society? And what happens when stories, languages, and visual material are translated and appropriated across cultures and periods? The course is designed as a collaborative endeavor, with seminars offered by the different partner institutions. The seminars are complemented by site visits and other cultural activities in and near Vienna to explore the course themes in practice.
