The Doctoral Programme of Social Work prepares top professionals for the field of social work who comprehend research methods and are able to formulate policies, strategic plans and evaluations of social programmes, policies and service development where social work participates. The Doctoral Programme of Social Work is offered by a partnership of the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague. It is intended for graduates of different variants of the MA Programme of Social Work and Social Policy. Also eligible are graduates of related degree programmes who have experience in addressing social problems or professional experience in social services or social policy, and who exhibit the skills and competencies needed in research and policy work. The programme’s courses and approach to dissertation research are based on the discipline of social work and overlap with the fields of psychology, education, special education and sociology, as well as criminal justice, economics and public health. In order to emphasize the programme’s openness to international collaboration, a high level of language competence is required of applicants, international scholars serve on the Subject Board, and students are recommended to study abroad (ideally for one semester).

Description of entrance examination and evaluation criteria for academic year 2016/2017 :

The description for the next academic year will not be available till the end of December.

For the entrance examination, the candidate attaches in advance a draft research plan that he/she intends to implement during the studies. Candidates consults their intention in advance with an expected supervisor. The exam consists of a discussion about the project of the dissertation and a check of basic assumptions for the study. Entrance examination will check the ability of the applicant to deal with the dissertation project. The questions of the entrance interview primarily focus on the theme of the applicant’s research project (max. 10 points).
An important criterion of the acceptance decidision is the quality of the applicant's theoretical and methodological development of the research project. The admissions committee also takes into account the relevance of the topic of the research project to the field of social work and to the long-term focus of the scientific activities of departments / faculties, and also the language aptitude of the candidate for studying.

Conditions for admission:

1. The submission of a completed application to study by 30.9.2016, along with the following attachments:
- A brief annotation of the research project, developed jointly with an authorized supervisor from the list of supervisors approved by the Specialist Board of studies at the faculty where the candidate applies;
- A brief professional biography including an overview of existing publications of the applicant;
- List of scientific literature by the candidate studied with respect to their individual interests and the chosen topic dissertation project;
- Other documents worthy of consideration (e.g. proof of passing the state examination or an internationally recognized certificate in a foreign language, proof of scientific practice at home or abroad, etc.).
2. Proof of completion of a master's degree or associated master's study program. Candidates who complete a master's degree or master's study program after the deadline for the filing of applications, must provide evidence of completion no later than 30. 10. 2016. In case of graduation abroad, applicants have to submitt nostrification of master diploma.
3. Defence of a brief proposal of the dissertation topic (max. 5 pages), which the applicant should submit along with their application to study.
4. To gain the minimal sum of points specified by the dean.

Information on the exercise of graduates:

Graduates of the PhD studies are able to manage research methods and their application in the field of social work, especially applied techniques suitable for comprehensive analysis of social problems, management of community care services and analysis of difficult living and working situations. He/she is able to conduct research, develop concepts and educate at the university level in the fields of social protection and theories and methods of social work, such as supervision, ethics, probation and mediation, and other application areas used in social work. He/she is able to coordinate conceptual and analytical work in management positions in institutions of social protection, criminal justice, organizations in the nonprofit sector and even in private enterprises, where social work is conducted.
