Dopis děkanky FHS k začátku letního semestru

Dear Students,

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the summer semester! Our Faculty has come alive again and I am very glad that after the quiet and half-empty weeks of the exam period we can once again enjoy together the positive presence of all of us.

First and foremost, I would like to sincerely thank all students who put their work, energy, and time into student evaluations. The faculty leadership considers student evaluations an essential feedback about the quality of courses and teaching and we will work with them closely to reflect and improve the educational experience at FHS. It is evident that an increasing number of students engage in the end-of-semester student evaluations, which makes us happy. We value this feedback and look forward to taking the evaluation process to a new level with the new format of student evaluations, which should be available from the new academic year.

I trust that you all look forward to the new semester, even as some of us return to the classrooms with sadness, uncertainty, or apprehension about how to follow up on the December tragedy at the Faculty of Arts, which affected us all deeply, each and every one of us individually, in ways that are not transferable. The University and Faculty continue to do their best to ensure that all students and all teachers feel safe in the University environment, feel assured by the steps the University and the Faculty are taking, and get the support they need. Please don’t hesitate to ask for support or help.

During the exam period, the Faculty enacted a number of provisions to ensure a safer and more actively experienced environment in our Faculty building. The Faculty website features a new link "Safety at FHS UK" on the top bar, which takes you directly to a page with all relevant contacts and information regarding safety and psychosocial support. The Faculty has established a security coordinator position; updated the crisis team; modified the building operating rules; Faculty leadership and key staff have received security training; we are fine-tuning the Faculty security plan; and we have engaged in the implementation of a university-wide information system (KISS). We have also innovated the concept of the Faculty entrance reception, in which we have decided to involve students as well.

With the new semester, we are introducing several innovations. We have launched a system of job opportunities for students directly at the Faculty building (so far available only in Czech, we are working on the English version). If you are interested in working as a faculty receptionist, you can apply through a link “Jobs for Students” in the "Students" section on the Faculty web. Here we will continually add all job opportunities available for students, whether long-term (reception, library, computer hub) or short-term (help with admission exams, Open Day, help with moving, stage set up for concert or conference…). In addition to social media, keep an eye on the faculty website as well!

There is a newly installed interactive info desk in the atrium near the main entrance for better orientation in the building, to search through the course schedule, with contacts and consultation hours, Faculty news or to quickly find out what time the next bus leaves. We plan to keep improving the info desk to make it as useful as possible so please feel free to let us know if you have any suggestions for the info desk. In the fall, a student platform Sustainable FHS was launched, if you are interested, please join in! The Faculty continues to seek and will support active and creative students who are interested in participating in the cultural life of the Faculty and want to share their talents, passions and connect with others. If you are interested in any of these activities, please write to . Last but not least, we are finishing the room for Ph.D. students, which will be available in March.

I wish you all an inspiring and successful 2024 summer semester.

Věra Sokolová,

Dean
