Linguist and Semiotician Bohumil Palek Passes Away

At the age of 86, Professor Bohumil Palek, a linguist and semiotician and a long-time employee of the Faculty of Humanities, has died on August 26, 2022.


In his academic work, he focused mainly on the analysis of suprasentential syntax and the construction of reference in a text, e.g. in the monographs "Cross-Reference: A Study from Hyper-Syntax" and "The Structure of Reference in a Text".

Professor Palek was also a leading expert on the works of the founder of modern semiotics, Charles S. Peirce, and translated several of his texts into Czech. He also published the "Semiotics" textbook.


He led several courses at the Electronic Culture and Semiotics study programme, for example "Introduction to Semiotics" and "The History of Semiotics".

He was a member of the Faculty Board of the PhD programme "Semiotics and Philosophy of Communication".
