The Society for Philosophical Anthropology cordially invites you to a lecture „Narrative and Self-Knowledge in Kierkegaard“ presented by dr. Jeffrey Allan Hanson (Harvard University). The lecute takes place in Prague Creative Center on September 16, 2019.
Abstract:
Kierkegaard is famous in part because he is as great a literary artist as he is a philosopher; in the entire history of Western civilization perhaps only Plato ranks above him in both philosophical insight and stylistic beauty, a rare combination indeed and one difficult to achieve. A large part of Kierkegaard’s renown with respect to his literary accomplishment has to do with his facility with story. He obviously loved all sorts of stories—fairy tales, myths, and narratives drawn from history, from the Bible, and from Greek and Latin classics—and he used them expertly in the course of his own philosophical writing. In my talk, I would like to look at some examples of Kierkegaard’s use of story to try to identify what he thinks are the limits and promises of storytelling when it comes to the question of the self.
