Annotation

Cross-national research that takes a social psychological approach to unemployment and the meaning of work is relatively limited. In this presentation, I address this gap in the literature by presenting preliminary findings on this topic from my research in progress in the Czech Republic. I will also compare and contrast these findings to the results of my research on this topic in the United States as presented in my book Job Loss, Identity, and Mental Health (Rutgers University Press 2016). Preliminary results from the current study point to differences in the way Czechs and people from the United States think about work and unemployment. Additionally, Czech participants indicate that national history plays a strong role in shaping their thoughts on these topics.

Dawn R. Norris, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Sociology at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (UWL) in the United States. She is currently a Visiting Fulbright Scholar at Univerzita Karlova, where she teaches a comparative course (US vs. Czech Republic) on the sociology of work and occupations. She uses qualitative and quantitative approaches to study work/unemployment, age, and mental health as they relate to identity and transitions. Her book Job Loss, Identity, and Mental Health (Rutgers University Press 2016) examines how social structure relates to identity after job loss, as well as the ways that identity relates to mental health, in the context of the Great Recession’s aftermath. Her work is currently being used in unemployment counseling at Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States. She has published in journals such as The Sociological Quarterly, Symbolic Interaction, and Research on Aging. Her current research examines the meaning of work and unemployment in the Czech Republic in the context of a relatively recent economic transition (the Velvet Revolution).
