Kampus Hybernská will host an international workshop called Punish or Rehabilitate through Work: Institutions, Discourses, and Agency in Central, Eastern, and Western, Central and Eastern Europe in the first half of the 20th century from 13 to 15 November. It will focus on various early 20th century institutions such as correction, reformatory, forced labour colony, disciplinary labour camp, etc. were intended to serve as re-educational facilities for those who deviated from middle-class norms of "decent behavior" and "proper work." In addition to the FHS UK, the Institute of Economic and Social History of the Faculty of Arts CU, the Historical Institute CAS, the Deutsche Historisches Institut Warschau and the Max Weber Stiftung are also involved in the organisation of the workshop.
Dr Sigrid Wadauer from the University of Vienna will have a keynote here named (Il)legitimate Means of Sustenance? Variations, Hierarchies, and Differences in Work and Livelihood and the Spectrum of Possible Consequences. . The keynote will take place in Room A.3 of the Kampus Hybernská on November 13 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm.
Debates over economic crisies, labour markets, and vagrancy in the 19th and early 20th centuries frequentely point out the ambiguity of being out of work. The lecture will ilustrate how distinctions were established and formalized and how individuals were categorized as entitled, deserving, deviant, or delinquent. The practical relevance of concepts such as honest sustenance, vocation, and the duty to care for the measure imposed will be highlighted.
