Call for Applications: Assistant Professor or Associate Professor at the Department of Art Theory and Practice, Faculty of Humanities, Charles University in Prague

ANNOUNCEMENT OF COMPETITIVE HIRING PROCESS



I hereby launch, in accordance with Article 2(1) of the Competitive Hiring Process Code of Charles University, the competitive hiring process for the position of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor at the Department of Art Theory and Practice of the Faculty of Humanities, Charles University in Prague.


The Department of Art Theory and Practice is a research and teaching unit that provides courses in the fields of theory, philosophy and history of art, media, and culture at the bachelor’s and master’s levels. The department participates in master’s degree programs such as Philosophy in the Context of the Humanities, Electronic Culture and Semiotics, Anthropological Studies, and Gender Studies. The department’s research focuses on the theory of contemporary art and culture.


Position Description

  • full‑time employment (1.0 FTE) in the position of AP2 (Assistant Professor) or AP3 (Associate Professor; preferred);

  • active participation in the development of the bachelor’s and master’s teaching portfolio provided by the department;

  • teaching courses offered in Czech and English bachelor’s and master’s degree programs;

  • supervision and review of qualification theses within Czech and English bachelor’s and master’s programs, participation in thesis defenses, state final examinations, and other departmental activities;

  • research and publication activity in the field; development of the department’s research potential and participation in joint projects.


Qualification Requirements

  • PhD or habilitation (associate professorship) in disciplines related to art theory and history, culture, and media;

  • specialization in contemporary pop culture (preferred) or contemporary art;

  • previous teaching and research experience at a higher‑education institution;

  • international awareness and overview of the field, with emphasis on current developments; demonstrated ability to engage with and analyze new trends in (pop)culture or contemporary art;

  • ability to teach in Czech and English; for international applicants, knowledge of Czech is not required at the time of application, but basic proficiency enabling communication and teaching in Czech is expected within three years;

  • publication activity in the area of (pop) culture or contemporary art;

  • organization skills, collegiality, and ability to work in a team.

  • a structured academic CV including a list of publications and other creative activities (related to the department’s focus);

  • (optional but advantageous): a web link to a video recording of a public appearance or lecture (e.g. included in the list of publications);

  • a motivation letter outlining both your further academic and research development and your vision of contributing to the department’s research and teaching (maximum 2 pages);

  • a brief proposal containing annotations and syllabi for four potential courses the applicant would teach

  • two representative samples of publication or creative work (may be provided as open‑access links);

  • a copy of the diploma certifying the highest level of education attained.


Additional Information

  • Start date: 1 October 2026

  • Employment contract: fixed term (3 years), with the expectation of extension

  • Salary: according to the salary regulations of Charles University (MT AP2/AP3) plus personal bonus
