Charles IV Documenta Artis Bohemiae Phototypica

The exhibition of photographs focused on 14th century Gothic plastic art will take place in the St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague and in the Chapel of the Holy Cross at Karlštejn, where Master Theodoric will be emphasised. The exhibition will inaugurate the celebrations of the 700th anniversary of the birth of Charles IV in Charles University.

Developing effective presentations in English

Need to address your audience in English? Want to know how to prepare an entertaining presentation? Interested in the basics of graphic design? If that is the case, the seminars are exactly right for you. The first two 180 minute lessons will take place on March 23 and April 24, respectively, and will be followed by a practical part two weeks later, which will include presentations by the students themselves, who will be given feedback. The seminars will take place in English and are aimed at doctoral and post-doctoral students of CU.

Department of Gender Studies, Faculty of Humanities, CU invites you the public lecture “Over the Rainbow: Labelle, Black Feminist Musical Self-Fashioning, and 1970s Freedom Dreams”. The lecture will be presented by Gayle Wald from George Washington University. The lecture shall take place in the university area Vokovice on March 31, 2016. The lecture and the follow-up discussion will be held in English. Admission is free.

Festival of Humanity and Solidarity

Students’ Association “Studenti FHS UK” is happy to invite you to the Festival of Humanity and Solidarity. The theme of this year is migration and its consequences in culture – music, theatre, photography and gastronomy – but also in the personal experience of volunteers, not only from FHS, who help manage the dismal situation of refugees on the borders of the European Union and at the places of conflict.

Pierre Rodrigo will give seminars at FHS

Department of German and French Philosophy, Erasmus Master Mundus EuroPhilosophie, is hosting Prof. Pierre Rodrigo from Université de Bourgogne in the week of 4 April 2016. Prof. Rodrigo will give seminars in the framework of the « Phénoménologie de l’image cinématographique » course. The relation between philosophy and cinema will be discussed from different points of view.

On 16 April, the traditional Day of Lifelong Learning and Graduation Festival, aimed at UK graduates and the public, will get under way. As part of the programme, three prominent experts on the life and times of Charles IV will give their lectures. One of them is Professor Jan Royt, Vice-chancellor of Charles University, who is an expert on the fine arts of the period under review.

Seminar: Life and Death of Charles IV

The seminar on the 700th anniversary of the birth of Charles IV will be held in the large auditorium of the Institute of Anatomy. The contributions will focus on the life and death of Charles IV. Charles’s inheritance from his ancestors, his fatal injury and the medical-anthropological interpretation of his skeletal remains will be discussed in the light of the latest research.

Department of German and French Philosophy and Erasmus Master Mundus EuroPhilosophie programme invites all colleagues and students to lectures presented as part of the EMM course „Philosophie de la religion: approches phénoménologique et métaphysique“. The lectures entitled The theological and the linguistic turn of XXth Century Philosophy will be presented by Dr Urszula Idziak-Smoczyńska, a member of the Institute for the Study of Religions at the Faculty of Philosophy, Jagiellonian University in Kraków.

Exhibition: Medicine from the Times of Charles IV to the Present

The exhibition focuses on the development of medicine and the Medical Faculty from the times of Charles IV to the present. Visitors will have the opportunity to see extracts from period textbooks, examine various medical instruments and photos from the history of the First Faculty of Medicine at Charles University. Information on the origin and development of many medical disciplines and architectural curiosities of buildings that belonged or belong to the First Faculty of Medicine will also be presented.

Congratulations, Charles IV – Open Air Event on Charles Square

Charles IV’s birthday celebration for the general public will take place on Charles Square. A medieval town will be set up with swordsmen, jugglers, musicians and craft markets, while workshops will be available for children. In the afternoon a historical procession will take the route to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. Charles the Great in Karlov, Prague. The Jaksi Taksi, Imodium and Blue Effect bands will play in addition to a rich accompanying programme.

Concert in the Great Hall

The Orchestra and Chorus of Charles University will perform the concert that was rehearsed for the Office of the President. The concert will include pieces by Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák and George Händel. It will take 70 minutes in total. The concert will also open the conference "Charles IV, Lands of the Bohemian Crown and Europe".

Conference Charles IV, Lands of the Bohemian Crown and Europe

In collaboration with The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, an international scientific conference will be held and attended by notable experts on the life and time of Charles IV. Contributions to the program will include lectures on general history as well as the history of art.

Ceremonial religious service in St. Vitus Cathedral

Cardinal Dominik Duka will lead a ceremonial mass on 14th May 2016, the day Charles IV was born. The st. Vitus cathedral, the most eastern Gothic Cathedral in Europe is the very place, where all Bohemian kings were crowned and which has been the spiritual heart of the country for many centuries.

St. Wenceslas Day

Wenceslas was the duke of Bohemia from 921 until his assassination in 935. He was murdered on Sptember 28 by his younger brother Boleslaus the Cruel. Immediately after his death Wenceslas was considered a martyr and a saint.
