Dana Bittnerová studied Ethnology at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University. Her academic profile developed in the field of ethnic processes, particularly issues relating to re-emigration after 1945. In 1992, she became a member of the Prague Group of School Ethnography (Pražská skupina školní etnografie, PSŠE), which focused on qualitative, ethnographic research on schools. Her work concentrated primarily on children’s culture, relationships within peer groups, and play.
In 2000, she returned to the topic of ethnicity. Together with Mirjam Moravcová, she explored questions of identity and lifestyle among contemporary national minorities and migrant groups. At the same time, she continued to work on school-related topics; together with Markéta Levínská and David Doubek, also members of PSŠE, she focused on issues connected with the education of Roma children and with the helping professions.
She sees the interconnection between schools and national and migrant groups in projects focused on children with migration experience, which she is developing together with her doctoral students. In recent years, she has been reflecting on topics in the anthropology of infrastructure and is preparing a monograph on the ethnography of train travel.
