Personal profile

Ondřej Váša studied at the CU Faculty of Humanities (bachelor’s) and the Institute of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the CU Faculty of Arts (master’s and doctorate). He has been lecturing at the Faculty of Humanities since 2009, and in 2019 he became a full-time assistant professor. He has previously also worked at the Faculty of Art and Architecture at the Technical University in Liberec, at the Benedikt Rejt Gallery in Louny, and at the Institute of Christian Art and the Catholic Theological faculty. He has been engaged in long-term studies in Rome (Biblioteca Hertziana), Florence (Museo Galileo) and London (Warburg Institute). In his research activities he deals with cross-sections of astronomy, philosophy and art, with a focus on the shared motif of friendship, or a “friendly universe”. He is the author of a number of specialist papers and co-author of five books, the two most recent of which concern the modern figure of the “cosmic human” (Eva Bendová, Ondřej Váša: Od balonu ke kosmickému vědomí. Aviatické eseje o české letecké duši, National Gallery in Prague 2020 and Lubomír Konečný, Ondřej Váša, Eva Bendová, National Gallery in Prague 2020). In 2023 he was the editor of a special edition of the Filozofický časopis journal (published by the Czech Academy of Sciences) on visions of a world without people, and co-editor of the American Semiotica journal, which focuses on the phenomenon of inhumanity. His external activities since 1997 have involved stints on the editorial teams of the magazines and newspapers Rock & Pop, Atelier, iDNES.cz and Deník.cz, and he has also made contributions to Lidové noviny, UNI magazine and Aktuálně.cz.
