Role of the Dean

  • The Dean is the head of the Faculty of Humanities, Charles University, and is its self-governing academic body.


  • The Dean acts and decides in matters concerning the Faculty, unless otherwise stipulated by the Higher Education Act. The Dean represents the Faculty externally and represents it in the Association of Deans of Faculties of Arts and Humanities in the Czech Republic. The Dean also chairs the Research Board of the Faculty.


  • The Dean is appointed and dismissed by the Rector of Charles University on the proposal of the Faculty Academic Senate; the term of office is four years.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Leadership and representation of the Faculty

  • Management of the Dean’s College and the Extended Dean’s College

  • Chairing the Research Board of the Faculty of Humanities, Charles University

  • Representing the Faculty of Humanities in the Association of Deans of Faculties of Arts and Humanities in the Czech Republic and in other bodies

  • Strategic direction of the Faculty and conceptual development

  • Cooperation with the Rectorate of Charles University in the area of faculty and university policy

  • Appointment and dismissal of Vice-Deans, the Faculty Secretary and Heads of Departments

  • Submission of the budget and annual reports of the Faculty of Humanities, Charles University

  • Review of the Faculty’s internal needs

  • Evaluation and analysis of the organisational reform

Profile

Doc. Věra Sokolová, M.A., Ph.D., is Associate Professor of History and Gender Studies at the Department of Historical Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, Charles University. Her research focuses on topics at the intersection of history, sociology and anthropology. In her teaching, she specialises in collective memory and public space, the history of gender and sexuality, identity politics and reproductive justice.


In addition to a number of scholarly articles, she is the author of the monographs Queer Encounters with Communist Power: Non-heterosexual Lives and the State in Czechoslovakia, 1948–1989 (Karolinum, 2021) and Cultural Politics of Ethnicity: Discourses on Roma in Communist Czechoslovakia (ibidem-Verlag, 2008), and co-editor of the publications Why EDI Matters: Equ(al)ity, Diversity and Inclusion in European Universities (Padova University Press, 2025), Odvaha nesouhlasit: feministické myšlení Hany Havelkové a jeho reflexe (FHS UK, 2019) and Gender and Generation (Litteraria Pragensia, 2007). She translated into Czech Leila Rupp’s monograph A Desired Past: A Short History of Same-Sex Love and Sexuality in America from the Arrival of Europeans to the Present (University of Chicago Press, 1999).


She was the first Chair of the Charles University Equal Opportunities Board (2022–2023), Vice-Chair of the Coimbra Group Equality & Diversity Working Group (2020–2025), and a member of the European Commission expert working group on inclusive gender equality in research and education (2023–2024).
