The Faculty of Humanities, CU cordialy invites you to a special guest lecture "Memory – Medium – Myth. The Mnemonic Character of Old Norse-Icelandic Literature" given by Dr. Jürg Glauser (University of Zurich, University of Basel). The lecture takes place in Jinonice on October 8, 2019.
Abstract of the lecture
Recent studies have shown that almost every genre and text group of the large body of Old Norse-Icelandic literature deals in some way or another with aspects of memory. One could even say that the many-faceted oral and written narratives from the Norwegian and Icelandic Middle Ages were one all-embracing example of how the past was created and memory constructed. The lecture gives 1) a short overview of the main directions of these recent memory studies in the field of Old Norse-Icelandic literary and cultural history and 2) analyses some representative texts which present especially interesting cases, such as Völuspá or Egils saga. Special attention will be paid to questions how medial forms influence the way in which memory is made.
