"Fornaldarsögur and Riddarasögur Motifs and manifold intertextual connections": 8.00 AM
"Fornaldarsögur and medieval Christian ideas of demonology": 11.00 AM
Of all the many genres of Old Norse saga literature - Sagas of Icelanders, Sagas of Kings, Sagas of Antiquity, Sagas of Bishops Sagas of saints, the Fornaldarsögur ("Sagas from Prehistory") and Riddarasögur ("Chivalric Saga") have only attracted interest from the end of the 20th century onwards. I will try and show the main themes and motifs of these two genres and also their manifold intertextual connections.
This lecture deals with the more enigmatic characters of the Fornaldarsögur nordrlanda and tries to show that they have - unlike the many troll figures - have little to do with pagan folkloristic concepts, but owe their existance, their descriptions and their functions to medieval Christian ideas of demonology.
