The Faculty of Humanities joins the Architecture Day on Sunday, October 2 from 1 pm to 5 pm.
The KRUH association in cooperation with local organizations and initiatives is preparing the twelfth edition of the nationwide festival in autumn, involving Czech, Moravian and Slovak towns and villages of all sizes. This year, it will take place from Friday, September 30 to Thursday, October 6, especially on the weekend of October 1 and 2, 2022.
The motto of the twelfth edition is "Don't demolish, transform!". The programme focuses on the ecological, economic and ethical dimensions of architecture and presents successful reconstruction and revitalization.
The headquarters of the Faculty of Humanities, Charles University converted from former 17. listopadu dormitories - canteen from Kuba & Pilař architects is in operation since 2020.
The central hall becomes the heart and a social center of the faculty. It is also a spacial connection of all three floors. The building entrance located on the raised plateau offers easy connection to all floors by two differently shaped one-flight staircases. Cantilevered arcades located on the perimeter of the central hall provide access to the seminar rooms, teachers offices and two lifts with escape staircases. There are big lecture halls, auditorium, library and deanery located on the lowest floor.
Among the used materials faced concrete combined with fine metal suspended ceiling`s mesh, black floor screed, white wooden elements and furniture prevail. The space is dominated by a set of variable relaxing seating furniture in orange colour.
A structurally glazed facade is proposed mainly as an acoustic barrier to the noise from six line route of the city circuit in the vicinity of the building. A double skin facade allows for natural ventilation and regulated sun shading of the inner space. Rounded glazed corners are link to the original building architecture.
In 2021, the building was awarded "Czech Architecture Award 2021" and "Grand Prix Architecture - National Architecture Award 2021".
