Red Line - Exhibition by Faculty's Ph.D. Graduate Filip Gurjanov

We cordially invite you to visit the exhibition of photographs by Filip Gurjanov, M.A., Ph.D., Faculty's Deutsche und französische Philosophie programme graduate! The exhibition titled "Red Line" will run from September 14 until October 15, 2026 at the Faculty. The opening will take place on September 14 in Relax Zone at 12:15.

Red Line

The theme of the photo-exhibition “Red Line” relates to Prague’s metro. Rather than simply providing documentation, the series of photos aim to show an artistic view of chosen motifs from spaces that can be found along the subway line. These spaces include metro stations (both platform areas and entry halls) as well as their surrounding areas, such as ventilation systems linked to the metro infrastructure, statues, or other aesthetic details. The exhibition attempts to demonstrate a fine tension between the subjective view of the artist and objective availability and appearance of something public and useful, such as a city’s transport network. Beyond usefulness, this infrastructure bears historical and aesthetic value, which these photos aim to draw your attention to. As the viewer moves around and observes various scenes and details from different metro stations, one makes a visual photographic journey from one side of the metro C line to the other. The exhibition is embedded in the theme of the workshop “Photographing and Pedagogical Practice”. The author of these photos, who is also a photography researcher, will present a new look on photographic practice understood as an encounter. This addresses the connection between the photographing subject and photographed objects in the way of their mutual co-dependancy and influence on one another as part of the creative process of photographing. The exhibition thus offers an example of what Gurjanov calls “images of encounter”: a thematic series of photographs expressing a dialectic of the subjective and the objective. Furthermore, the selection offers a reflection on what can be considered a common theme (in German “roter Faden”) in photography. What began as a fascination with Prague’s ventilation towers developed into a broader search for aesthetic impressions to be found in and around the metro line, resulting in the collection “Red Line”.
