Research Areas

Martin Heřmanský is a socio-cultural anthropologist. He has long been involved in the study of subcultures (especially youth) and native North America. His research has focused on the transgressive and subversive aspects of body modifications, the constitution of post-rurality in Central European space, the transformations of subcultural interrelations in post-socialism, the construction of subcultural identity of the Czech emo subculture and, most recently, the potential of resistance in Native American hip hop. In addition to these topics, he has recently been interested in the implications of AI development for epistemic institutions (especially academic ones).
